Polaris Economics GmbH is an independent management consultancy based in Heidelberg. Hermann Althoff is its Managing Director and the person who does the work. He studied business at the University of Mannheim (Diplom-Kaufmann, 1984–1989) and spent 34 years at BASF in general-management roles: people, plants, customers, and capital, with P&L that sat with him.

Most of that career was in Asia. He lived and worked in Singapore and Hong Kong for 22 years. He is a German national and a Hong Kong permanent resident. From 2006 he built and ran Engineering Plastics across Asia Pacific. From Ludwigshafen he later ran the global Polyamide & Intermediates business: PA6 and PA66, caprolactam, adipic acid, HMD, ADN, ammonia. From Singapore he ran global Leather & Textile Chemicals, including the sale of the textile business to Archroma and the leather business to Stahl.
Der größte Teil dieser Laufbahn lag in Asien. Er hat 22 Jahre in Singapur und Hongkong gelebt und gearbeitet. Er ist deutscher Staatsbürger und Daueraufenthaltsberechtigter in Hongkong. Ab 2006 hat er Engineering Plastics in Asien-Pazifik aufgebaut und geführt. Von Ludwigshafen aus hat er später das weltweite Geschäft Polyamid & Vorprodukte verantwortet: PA6 und PA66, Caprolactam, Adipinsäure, HMD, ADN, Ammoniak. Von Singapur aus hat er das weltweite Leder- und Textilchemiegeschäft geführt, einschließlich der Veräußerung des Textilgeschäfts an Archroma und des Ledergeschäfts an Stahl.
His last line role at BASF was Senior Vice President, Regional Business Unit Performance Chemicals Asia Pacific, based in Hong Kong: about 1,100 people and 12 plants, full P&L, until June 2023. Over sixteen years in the region he built nine chemical plants, more than a billion euros of capital. In July 2023 he established Polaris Economics to make that operating experience available to corporate clients, independently.
Seine letzte Linienfunktion bei BASF war Senior Vice President der Regional Business Unit Performance Chemicals Asia Pacific, mit Sitz in Hongkong: rund 1.100 Mitarbeiter und 12 Werke, volle P&L, bis Juni 2023. In sechzehn Jahren in der Region hat er neun Chemieanlagen gebaut, mehr als eine Milliarde Euro Kapital.
